Party punch is one beverage option for holiday parties.

Everyday is a holiday. Around the world right now people are celebrating local, national, religious or other festivals in personally meaningful ways. Two common denominators in holiday activities are food and drink. Somehow when people gather offering refreshment seems natural. The best holiday party drinks are those that reflect the occasion and also target the tastes and lifestyles of those assembled. Just remember to have non-alcoholic offerings for young guests and drivers. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Spring

    • The season of spring has a hopeful and whimsical air. There are several holidays for which you may organize a party including April Fools, Easter, Earth Day, Mother's Day and Father's Day. For April Fool's day design a humorous beverage like one based in blue-raspberry drink mix or blue curacao with iced gummy sharks floating therein. Come Easter give the kids at your party a orange-chocolate milk shake topped with jelly beans, and the adults can enjoy the same only made with chocolate vodka. On Earth Day consider serving a party punch made with all organic ingredients. Finally, for Mother's and Father's day celebrations, the best drinks are those the honoree would most enjoy.

    Summer

    • Summer offers traditional celebrations like July 4th where red, white and blue party beverages adorn the table. There are also some lesser-known beverage-oriented festivals for consideration that create themes for your gathering and also give you exceptional ideas for the beverage service. For example, host a Daiquiri party on National Daiquiri Day, July 19th. Alternatively, celebrate Ice Cream Soda Day on July 20th with your family's favorite soda combination. Come August 12th there's Chocolate Milk Shake Day too, which could be the star of an ice cream party.

    Fall

    • Two holidays come immediately to mind as the calendar turns over--Halloween and Thanksgiving. The costume balls traditional at Halloween make an ideal backdrop for scary beverages complete with dry ice. Think in terms of creepy cocktails, terrifying tonics and forbidding fruit punch. The best beverages for this holiday have some type of decoration or color that improves the overall impact. For example, take a bit of cotton candy and float it on your beverages to look like spider webs (complete with a gummy spider).

For Thanksgiving choices become focused on hearth, home and your traditions. Marry the beverages you choose to your food, like cranberry cocktails and spiced apple martinis. Or serve up something warm for those cool fall nights like mulled cider.

    Winter

    • Rounding out the year we move into holidays like Christmas and Valentine's Day. In considering Christmas beverages endeavor to make a drink as visually appealing as its flavor. Use sugar sprinkles for snow, hang tiny candy canes from the side of the glass or add a tidy bow to the glass handle.

Valentine's celebrates the spirit of love. Use that as the foundation for endearing beverages that have ingredients like chocolate for passion, cinnamon for excitement and champagne for bubbling happiness. Since this is likely a more private celebration, the best drink combination is one with your partner's favorite flavors served with a kiss.
