MacBook 15 Specs

Apple designs several different versions of their MacBook laptop computers. Standard MacBook computers are available with a 13-inch screen. MacBook Pro computers are available with a 13-inch screen, a 15-inch screen or a 17-inch screen. At the time of writing, the latest hardware revision of the 15-inch MacBook Pro was released in early 2011.

  1. Core Components

    • The 15-inch MacBook Pro is available with a 2.0, 2.2 or 2.3 gigahertz (GHz) Intel Core i7 quad-core processor with a six or eight megabyte (MB) L3 cache. Four gigabytes (GB) of SO-DIMM 1333 megahertz (MHz) DDR3 RAM support the processor. The RAM is stored in two RAM slots and can be upgraded to as much as eight GB of RAM. The computer is available with a 500 or 750 GB 5400 RPM SATA hard drive, a 500 GB 7300 RPM SATA hard drive, or a 128, 256 or 512 GB solid-state hard drive. The 15-inch MacBook Pro also features a 8x slot-loading optical disc drive that can read and write DVDs, double-layer DVDs and CDs.

    Graphics

    • The 15.4-inch LCD display uses LED backlighting and is available with a glossy or anti-glare surface. The display operates at up to 1440 pixels by 900 pixels. The MacBook Pro 15-inch is available with either a Radeon HD 6490M graphics adapter from AMD or a Radeon HD 6750M graphics adapter. The 6490M features 256 MB of GDDR5 RAM that operates at 2.0 GHz. The 6750M features 1 GB of GDD5 RAM that operates at 2.2 GHz. A Thunderbolt port provides options for connecting an external display that can mirror the primary display or act as an independent second display. The Thunderbolt port is compatible with DVI, VGA and HDMI with the correct adapters.

    Wireless Connections

    • An internal Wi-Fi adapter allows the MacBook Pro to connect to 802.11a, b, g or n networks. The MacBook Pro can connect directly to Bluetooth-compatible devices, like cell phones or headsets, via its internal Bluetooth 2.1 adapter. The adapter is compatible with enhanced data rate technology for quickly transferring files over Bluetooth.

    Wired Connections

    • The MacBook Pro can connect to wired networks via its 10/100/1000 gigabit Ethernet port. It also features one FireWire port that can transfer data at up to 800 megabits per second (Mbps), two USB 2.0 ports that can transfer data at up to 480 Mbps and a Thunderbolt port that transfers data at up to 10 Gbps. There is also an audio line-in jack and an audio line-out jack. The laptop can accept SD cards via its SDXC slot.

    Physical

    • The 15-inch MacBook pro is 0.95 inches tall when it is closed. It is 14.35 inches wide and 9.82 inches deep. The entire system weighs about 5.6 lbs.

    Software

    • MacBook Pro computers include the Mac OS X operating system. As of the time of publication, they include version 10.6, codenamed Snow Leopard. They also include the iLife media software suite, which includes iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb and GarageBand.

    Battery

    • The MacBook Pro uses a 77.5 watt-hour lithium battery that can provide up to seven hours of battery life for Web browsing with networking enabled. The laptop also includes a power adapter which connects to the laptop with Apple's MagSafe technology.
