If you do not have a collection of art projects that your children have made, work with your kids to create handmade ornaments, vases, framed artwork or holiday decorations especially for grandma. Have your kids make a card to hang from the basket, and tie a bright red bow on the handle.

People purchase gift cards for holidays all the time, but why not make your own gift cards that your gift recipient can redeem at any time? Have each person in your immediate family make up his or her own gift card. The gift card should be redeemable for a service, such as free lawn mowing for a month, or, for older women with newborns, a weekend of free babysitting. Be creative and make the service that the gift card is for something that the recipient will enjoy.

The Chauffeur

A son or grandson with a little free time has the opportunity to impress his mother or grandmother by being her chauffeur for a day. Polish up the car and put on a suit and tie with a matching uniform hat. Pull up outside mom or grandma's home the morning of her birthday and offer to be her driver for the day. Take her to a day spa, out to lunch and to do some shopping, always remembering to hold the door for her to get in and out of the car and allowing her to sit comfortably in the back seat on her special day.

For the older woman who is still working late at the office, surprise her with some free maid service when she arrives home. Get the kids together and after mom or grandma goes off to work set about cleaning her house or apartment, making sure everything sparkles by day's end. Cook her a nice meal to enjoy when she walks in the door, and run her a foaming bubble bath to relax in before she drifts off to sleep.
