PowerPoint: Advanced Features

PowerPoint is a key software component of Microsoft's Office suite of productivity applications. PowerPoint is used to create presentations displayed in meetings and in classrooms. The latest version as of 2011, called PowerPoint 2010, includes several advanced features that you can use in creating and sharing presentations.

  1. Backstage View

    • Backstage View is a feature in Microsoft PowerPoint that allows users to manage their presentation files. It replaces the Microsoft Office button from previous versions of Microsoft PowerPoint yet has the same functionality. The feature also grants access to a document's properties, such as the presentation name, its creator's name, its date of creation and its file size. In Backstage View, users can also open, save, share and print their presentations.

    Office Auto-Revisions

    • Office Auto Revisions is an advanced feature that automatically saves versions of your presentation in real time. With the feature, according to Microsoft, you "can automatically save different, progressive versions of your presentations so that you can retrieve part or all of earlier versions." If a user forgets to manually save a file, or another author overwrites content, the Auto Revisions feature will allow access to both newer and previous versions of the presentation.

    Merge and Compare

    • The Merge and Compare feature aims to minimize the time spent synchronizing multiple versions of the same presentation. PowerPoint allows users to combine two presentations together using this feature. Merge and Compare is useful for groups that work on a presentation through email or remote communication. Users have the option of saving the combined presentation or just comparing them within the same window. Additionally, the feature allows its user to manage and choose which changes or edits to incorporate into the final presentation.

    Advanced Picture Editor

    • With PowerPoint, users can embed media such as pictures into their presentations. In the latest edition (PowerPoint 2010), you can apply artistic effects to pictures to give them an appearance of a sketch drawing or painting. Among the advanced effects are glass, glowing edges, paint strokes, pencil sketch, watercolor sponge and photocopy. Another advanced photo editing feature is the ability to remove unwanted portions of a picture such as distracting objects or the background.
