Decorating Ideas for Labor Day

Say so-long to summer with a well-decorated Labor Day party.

Labor Day is often synonymous with the last big party day of summer. Take the opportunity to throw a farewell bash to the season. Whether your theme is patriotic, floral, simple, or extravagant, you can make your Labor Day shindig the talk of the neighborhood with a few decorating essentials.

  1. American

    • Because Labor Day celebrates the dedication of the American worker, consider a decor that pays similar tribute. Red, white and blue stars, stripes and streamers provide the type of patriotic ambiance needed for an all-American barbecue. For centerpieces, place small American flags with bouquets of red, white and blue flowers.

You could also use shredded office paper as confetti for your party, perhaps scattered on serving tables. And break out unused sparklers from your Fourth of July party to pass out as party favors.

    White

    • An old fashion rule states that no one should wear white after Labor Day (at least in cool climates), so make the most of the fashion bylaw by hosting an all-white event. Hang white Chinese lanterns above your patio, and place white tablecloths on your picnic tables. Centerpiece options include white daisies in white containers, accented by white candles. The napkins, plates and plastic silverware all should be in the same hue. The whole look will create a fresh and clean look for your Labor Day party.

    Beach Party

    • Bid summer adieu by paying homage to the beach parties made famous in the 1950s. Your Labor Day pool party will be the place to be when you turn your pool deck into a summer splash fest by placing decorative beach lights along the outside of the deck. You can also use outdoor tiki torches to help create the seasonal feel. For your picnic tables, place toys pails of sand in the center. You could also place tea lights in shallow containers filled with sand. Complete the atmosphere by inflating beach balls and other pool accessories. Even without a pool, you can decorate with a beachy or tropical theme, and plan a menu in that vein.

    Outdoor Lounge

    • Labor Day should be a day of relaxation, and turning your outdoor entertainment area into a lounge space is one way to kick back and relax before the end of summer. Providing this simple, yet elegant, decor for your party requires little effort. Group your patio furniture together to create an intimate area to entertain your guests. You could also move a daybed or a small love seat outside for additional seating. Hanging white linens around the seating area creates a dramatic touch. This type of party is ideal for small groups or for a night with just you and your partner. Plus, the minimal decorations can be used for other entertainment events held throughout the year.

Another lounging option is to place picnic blankets and throw pillows around the backyard. Guests can sit or stretch out and enjoy one last low-key summer picnic.
