Restaurant Duties for a Resume

A resume is a tricky page or two to get right. A person with restaurant experience may feel he can summarize his previous duties in a few lines of print, but with a little more thought, he can identify many more areas of the industry he has expertise in. Some of these are more abstract than others.

Customer Interaction

  • Customer service is an integral part of restaurant work. A resume should indicate that customer service is important to a worker. There are several different ways to convey this. For example, a resume could include the duty of greeting customers. Another duty is interacting with the customer to inform her of the menu choices and suggest suitable food or beverage choices. Taking orders is another duty, and the resume should state whether the server took both drink and food orders, as the ability to judge whether customers are of a legal age to drink is important in the restaurant trade.

Money Handling

  • Cash handling is another essential part of restaurant work. A resume should list the types of payment the worker is familiar with, such as credit cards, bar tabs or vouchers. A worker with extra responsibility for cash, such as tallying up the checks or making the daily or weekly bank run should list this as one of his duties. This shows the previous employer trusted him with the money.

Basic Duties

  • The basic duties of a server are to set up her area, bus tables, clean floors and tables and serve food and drink. She should list these duties on her resume in brief and state how many tables or people she typically served at one time.

Teamwork and Organizational Skills

  • Efficiency and organization are valued in the restaurant business. A worker can list his organizational skills on his resume. For example, he can write that he managed his time efficiently or has experience in multitasking. Teamwork is another focus of restaurant work. He can list his experiences of teamwork on his resume. For example, wedding parties or large events can be stressful for servers and experience of handling this type of event in conjunction with a team is beneficial to the resume.

Extra Skills / Responsibility

  • Any other skills or responsibilities a worker had in a previous job should also be listed on the resume. For example, the worker might have experience pouring beer from taps or serving wine. Extra management responsibilities, such as closing up at the end of the day or supervising other staff, would also be beneficial to include in a resume.
