Pamprin is a medication used for the relief of symptoms such as headaches, cramps, body aches and fatigue associated with the menstrual cycle. There are four different types of Pamprin marketed towards specific symptoms. There are multi-symptom, cramp, all-day and max formulas. The ingredients of each formula vary slightly.
The multi-symptom formula is designed to address a variety of symptoms including cramping, headaches, bloating and irritability. There are three active ingredients included in this formula. Each caplet contains 500 mg of acetaminophen, used as a pain reliever. A 25 mg diuretic called pamabrom is included to help address bloating. Pyrilamine maleate is an antihistamine included in a small 15 mg amount. The antihistamine is used to help relieve headaches.
Similar to the multi-symptom formula, this formula designed specifically for cramps includes acetaminophen as a pain reliever and pamabrom as a diuretic. Pamabrom is included in the same 25 mg dosage, however the acetaminophen dosage is lower than that of the multi-symptom formula at only 250 mg. In addition to these ingredients, this formula includes another pain reliever, magnesium salicylate. Magnesium salicylate is used for pain relief, fever reduction and inflammation relief. Magnesium salicylate is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, thus individuals who are allergic to NSAIDs should avoid choosing this formula.
The only major active ingredient in this all-day formula is naproxen sodium. This is utilized as a pain reliever and fever reducer. Naproxen is classified as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and helps relieve pain and inflammation by stopping the production of the substance that produces these symptoms. There are 200 mg of naproxen and 20 mg of sodium in each caplet.
This formula is different from the other three formulas because it contains caffeine. The inclusion of 65 mg of caffeine is for diuretic purposes, which helps relieve bloating. The other two active ingredients, acetaminophen and aspirin, are included for pain relieving purposes. The caffeine included in this formula is comparable to the amount contained in one cup of coffee. The manufacturer recommends limiting other caffeine intake while taking this medication because excess caffeine may cause nervousness, irritability, increased heartbeat and sleeplessness.
