California Redwood Gift Ideas

California Redwood Gift Ideas thumbnail
Redwood gifts can be used to commemorate a visit to a redwood forest in California.

California redwoods, or coastal redwoods, can trace their history back 200 million years ago. These trees can reach heights of more than 360 feet and diameters of more than 24 feet. Sometimes, proceeds from the sale of California redwood gifts help fund preservation efforts for California's redwood forests. Some redwood gift ideas include bonsai trees, bowls, sculptures or tree dedications.

  1. Bonsai Tree

    • A bonsai tree is a smaller version of a full-size tree. California redwood bonsai trees can be complicated to take care of, so they should only be given to someone who has had experience with bonsai trees or is willing to take extra time to learn how to care for it. California redwood bonsai trees can serve as reminders of a trip to a redwood forest or just bring a bit of Northern California to any other part of the country. If you're going to give someone a California redwood bonsai, remind them to keep the plant hydrated and out of extreme temperatures.

    Bowls

    • Wooden bowls can be used for cooking, serving, or simply as decoration. Discarded California redwood is made into various sizes of handcrafted wood bowls. These could be used as a gift for someone who is kitchen savvy or just likes wood decorations. A redwood bowl could be paired with organic snacks or other redwood kitchen utensils for a more elaborate gift.

    Sculpture

    • A redwood sculpture can be given as a gift to celebrate an achievement or event. Redwood sculptures vary in size, shape and depiction. For an anniversary, try to find a redwood sculpture that depicts romance, such as a heart or embracing couple. For a birthday, try to find a redwood sculpture that depicts the recipient's favorite hobby or animal. Redwood carved flowers could be used as a gift for a special occasion, like Mother's Day or a graduation.

    Tree Dedication

    • Through the Save the Redwoods League, you can dedicate a tree or whole grove of redwoods, to a loved one or friend. This gift is on the pricey side, available with at least a $1,000 donation to the league, but contributes to redwood conservation efforts. With this gift, you get to name the redwood or grove that you choose in honor groves found in a few redwood forest state parks in California. The recipient of this gift will get a certificate of dedication and a map with the name and location of the tree. You can either travel to one of the designated parks to select your tree or grove, or you can have one of the organization's staff members select one for you if you can't make the trip. With this gift, you'll be giving your loved one a personalized present and be helping to save California redwoods from deforestation.

    Seedlings

    • If you'd like to try to grow your own redwood tree, or even your own redwood forest, you can purchase seeds or seedlings at some Californian state parks. At Muir Woods National Monument, a redwood national forest located near San Francisco, you can purchase seeds or seedlings from the gift store. These redwood tree starters can be taken home as souvenirs to plant at home or given to someone special.
