If your bathroom lets in a little light, you can find a few plants suitable for hanging baskets. A bathroom that lets in a lot of natural light allows for many more options. If your bathroom doesn't have windows, consider installing plant lights. Any fluorescent energy-saver bulb qualifies as a plant light. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Spider Plant

    • The spider plant, a favorite hanging basket plant among many houseplant enthusiasts, displays long, light-green and white leaves. It thrives in high indirect light and warm temperatures from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your spider plant thriving, by following proper-care procedures. Check plants each day and water only if the soil is dry. Keep the soil evenly moist, but do not over water. Hang spider plants out of direct sunlight. Fertilize it once every two months with a complete, water-soluble fertilizer recommended for houseplants. If your plant hangs in medium light, fertilize it once every three months. The tips of spider plant leaves burn when too much fertilizer, or water that is high in soluble salts is used. Consider watering spider plants with bottled water.

    Boston Fern

    • Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata), a popular outdoor summer plant in the South, lives as a popular indoor plant in the dry, hot West -- in states such as California and Arizona. It makes an especially attractive, hanging basket plant with its high-arching, long-draping fronds. Boston fern thrives in low light and daytime temperatures of 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit and nighttime temperatures of 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The humid conditions of the average bathroom make an ideal home for Boston fern.

    Red Flame Ivy

    • Red flame ivy (Hemigraphis alternata) requires medium light and temperatures of 60 degrees Fahrenheit and above. Medium to high humidity, 30 percent and above, keeps the attractive red leaves in optimal condition. High or low light, drying winds and cold drafts sends this plant into a fast decline. Red flame ivy requires evenly moist soil at all times. A pot-in-pot watering system is ideal for hanging baskets. Since the plant has a vigorous root system, repot it annually. To keep it branching and draping well, pinch out the growing tips regularly. Give red flame ivy a shower once a month to remove dust.

    Wandering Jew

    • Wandering Jew (Zebrina pendula), a popular, easy-care houseplant, displays long runners with variegated olive and cream leaves with purple undersides. Its cascading form makes it a favorite hanging basket plant for houseplant enthusiasts. It tolerates medium light, but bright indirect light keeps the colorful variegation strong. Room temperatures of 55 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit and 30 percent or higher humidity keeps the leaf edges from turning brown and the plant thriving. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Fertilize wandering Jew three times in summer with a foliage plant food, and repot it when the roots fill the container. Pinching keeps it shrubby, and pruning periodically keeps it from getting leggy. Shower the plant occasionally to remove dust.
