When choosing the right breed of dog, a number of factors may need to be considered. Things such as size, temperament, health issues and ease of training can be important. Those looking for a small, uncomplicated dog breed have several to choose from, each with traits that can desirable or problematic.

  1. Bichon Bolognese

    • The Bichon Bolognese is a small dog, standing about 12 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 4 and 9 lbs. They have a sturdy build with a thick coat of curly white hair which often covers the eyes. They are a docile breed which requires little room and do not need a yard. Short daily walks keep them calm and well exercised. A loyal breed, the Bolognese also has few health issues and can be easy to train if a firm hand is used.

    Manchester Terrier

    • Manchester terriers come in both standard and toy versions, with the smaller breeds reaching around 12 inches at the shoulder and between 6 and 8 lbs. in weight. They are a short-haired breed, very similar in appearance to a small doberman. An active breed, the dogs do need long daily walks but are suitable for small apartments or homes with no yard. They are quick to train thanks to their high intelligence. A few skin problems are common with the breed, generally because of sun exposure, as is the blood disorder glaucoma.

    Glen of Imaal Terrier

    • The Glen of Imaal terrier is a small breed in the sense that it has short legs. Standing at up to 14 inches at the shoulder, they are solidly built and can weigh between 34 and 36 lbs. They have a thick, gray, curly coat which needs minimal, but regular grooming. With a mellow temperament they are loyal family dogs who need short daily walks. The breed is good for small homes and apartments and does not need a yard. Due to their weight and small legs, they do suffer some hip problems in later life.

    Miniature Pinscher

    • The miniature pinscher is a smaller version of the doberman, standing at 12 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 8 to 10 lbs. A solidly built breed, they have short coats and are generally a healthy animal with few inherent illnesses. They are loyal and smart so can be easy to train as long as a firm hand is used. Like the larger breed they are brave and protective of their owners. They are energetic so need plenty of play and walks, but do not require too much space.
