Period themes such as Old Hollywood make for fun city birthday parties.

City birthday party themes are fun and easy to create for kids and grown-ups alike. When planning a city birthday theme, you can incorporate elements of culture and history into the party for a unique and memorable event. Purchase or design your own invitations, decorations, activities, goodie bag favors and gifts to tie the city theme together. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Ancient Egypt

    • To create an ancient Egypt setting, tape shiny gold wrapping paper up on the walls. Use a black marker to sketch a brick pattern onto the paper, creating a pyramid look. Draw hieroglyphs onto the paper for a tomb effect. Stick with white-and-gold color schemes, and incorporate pictures of famous pyramids, pharoahs and mummies into invitations, decorations or other party décor. For an extra special event, make it a costume party and your guests will actively contribute to the theme.

    Las Vegas Theme

    • Just because you're not in Las Vegas doesn't mean you can't party like you are. For a Las Vegas birthday theme, throw a casino party. Use the classic playing card colors of red, black and white in streamers, balloons, table cloths, plastic cups and paper plates. Many party supply stores carry casino-themed decorations, or you can create your own with construction paper. Cut out diamond, club, heart and spade symbols and a few circles to design as poker chips with markers. Set up card tables and distribute playing cards and plastic poker chips. For adult parties, complete the theme with specialty cocktails.

    The Lost City of Atlantis

    • The fabled city of Atlantis is a topic of intrigue, mystery and awe. Incorporate these moods into a "lost city" birthday party theme with sheer, draping fabrics, dim, blue lighting and underwater soundscapes. Not much is known about the city of Atlantis, so you are free to get creative with your own interpretation using ancient-themed decorations, pottery and archaeological props. Whatever Atlantis might have been, believers of the city's existence agree that it now lies in ruins somewhere deep on the ocean floor, so accentuate the atmosphere with the mysteries of the deep, including large, colorful jellyfish and mermaid cut-outs or props.

    Modern Metropolitan

    • The most remarkable thing about any modern city is its skyline. Make or purchase a skyline banner to hang on a wall, or construct a large, 3D city-scape with tall cardboard props to give the party a city look and feel. Accentuate the party area with street sign decorations, red and blue light bulbs and neon or blinking signs, if possible. Capture the fast-paced feel of modern metropolitan city night life with pulsing, up-tempo house or dance music.
