Hippie costumes are popular when trying to evoke the '60s.

The 1960s was an era of revolution and drastic change in America. In this colorful decade, hippies, flower children and disco came alive, John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr. were assassinated and protesters fought for peace and love, not war, which prompted the inclusion of peace signs and bright colors in fashion. Music continued to evolve as well, with the introduction of bands such as the The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. With so much activity and change, there are many costume ideas that portray this decade.

  1. Marilyn Monroe

    • Though Marilyn Monroe died in 1962, she remains a popular movie icon from the period. You will need a sexy '60s-style dress, a short blonde wig and a pair of high-heeled shoes. Make sure that your makeup is bold and that you have her signature mole on your upper lip.

    Elvis Presley

    • Elvis Presley wore a signature white jump suit in the '60s, with his jet black hair slicked back and some black shades. Do not forget the long side burns and the black wing-tip shoes.

    Fred Flintstone

    • Cartoon character Fred Flintstone made his debut in the '60s. A cave man top in bright orange and black with wide turquoise tie should do the trick to portray Fred. Accessories such as a wooden club or a pet dinosaur can add to the costume.

    Hippie

    • We cannot forget the ultimate '60s costume: the hippie. This costume can be as simple as wearing a pair of bell bottoms, a shirt with embroidered trim and some platform shoes. You can accent with a headband or a crocheted hat for women. For the hippie men, add a fringed leather vest and some round sunglasses. Hippie women can wear a long dress and a crocheted long vest over the top, then add some bulky peace sign necklaces and a bangle bracelet.

    Go-Go Girl

    • This sexy '60s costume can be as simple as donning a sparkling sequin short dress with a pair of patent leather tall boots and teased big hair. You can also add some dazzle with a choker necklace and arm pieces.
