Twitter users tend to update their Twitter timelines frequently, and since timelines only show a limited number of messages at a time, you may want to mark specific messages that you find poignant or informative to revisit at a later time. The official Twitter site and many Twitter applications support favorites, a function that serves exactly this purpose.
When using Twitter or applications, such as Echofon, that support favorites, you can click a button next to specific "tweets" (messages) that others have posted. This button will set the tweet as a favorite and display a small star icon on the official Twitter website to indicate that you wish to save the message for later viewing. This is an efficient way to save noteworthy quotes, statistics, headlines or links to websites -- especially if you know that the user who posted the tweet updates frequently.
When you are logged into Twitter, you can view your favorites by clicking the link on your sidebar. Official Twitter apps for smartphones, including Android and iPhones, have a tab for favorites as well. Note that others can also view tweets that you have marked as a favorite when viewing your profile.
However, if you have marked as favorite a tweet from a user who has set her Twitter account to private, users without permission to see her Twitter account will not see this in your list of favorite tweets. You can click on the star icon next to a favorited tweet to remove it from your list if you no longer like the message or if you accidentally added the message as a favorite.
When using Twitter on your phone, you can favorite messages by composing a text (SMS) message to your Twitter shortcode. Type "fav" followed by a space and another user's Twitter name to mark his latest message as a favorite. For example, if your friend "JohnSmith" just posted a message that you want to visit later, send "fav JohnSmith" to your Twitter shortcode.
