What Are Some Fun Family Activities for Summer?
Summer is the perfect season for planning fun family activities. The weather is warmer, inviting outside exploration. The kids are out of school, allowing for more quality time together. Summer is a time for planning vacations, creating adventures and finding ways to spend time together in a variety of ways. Here are some suggestions for making the most of your family-friendly summer season.

Amusement Parks
-
Go in search of the best roller coaster. At an amusement park, kids can be kids and adults can feel like kids again. Most parks have a range of rides from tame to scary, so finding thrills for all members of the family is possible. If the weather is hot, choose a water park. Large-scale amusement parks offer more than just rides. Evening concerts and light shows may be available, but check schedules for these. Arcade games, miniature golf courses and street plays can also be found at many amusement and theme parks. Map out a road trip and visit several amusement parks in search of the best roller coaster or waterslide.
Camps
-
Summer is associated with camps, but not all camps are just for kids. Resorts across the country offer family learning camps for tennis, golf and hiking. Dude ranches offer horseback-riding adventures for the entire family. Many churches offer family retreats in the summer. If you don't feel the need for an organized camping experience, pack up the equipment and take the family camping at a state park or campground. If sleeping in tents is too much wilderness, rent a mobile home or pull camper that offers more of the luxuries of home.

On a Budget
-
Plan a family kayak adventure. If the family budget is limited, create fun activities that don't require much travel. Explore your state parks for hiking, biking, nature walks and other educational activities. Admission is usually minimal and many offer picnic areas. Create practical projects at home that will engage younger children such as planting an herb and vegetable garden. Local libraries often offer family activities in the summer including reading programs and summer concert series. Set up a tent in your back yard and spend the night under the stars. Visit a nearby lake for kayaking, canoeing or fishing.
Planning Tips
-
If you want to ensure a successful family activity, plan it together. Let all family members make suggestions and have input on the final decisions. Young children may be happy with the choices made by Mom and Dad, but teens and young adults have strong opinions about their summer activities. Be willing to make compromises so that everyone can enjoy the time together. Create a budget and make sure everyone is aware of it. Assign tasks to all family members so activities run smoothly and everyone participates.
