Interior decorators can feature items that are both antique or replicas and put them together by embracing a few common colors and patterns.

Mixing items in country cottage decorating makes the bathroom look as if the decorative pieces were bought at different times throughout the years and added to the bathroom as they were purchased. Additionally, while many of the pieces lean on the rustic side, it's also permissible to feature a few nicer pieces to the decorating scheme. For example, the decorator might hang a gilded gold mirror in the Baroque-style above an antique pedestal sink. A silver brush, comb and mirror set brings a decorative element to the back of the toilet.

A set of toile-patterned curtains along with a matching skirt adorn the windows and the sink area. A oval braided rug keeps the floor in front of the bathtub warm after a bath. Baskets made of pine twigs sit on shelves to store items like bath towels and washcloths. A matching pine twig stool provides a place to sit while toweling off after a bath. Mason jars hold bathroom necessities like cotton balls, cotton swabs, bath beads, decorative soaps and other small items. Wooden pegs allow homeowners to hang plain white bath towels or terrycloth robes within reach of the bathtub. Candles placed on a wall shelf right next to the bathtub as well as floating candles in a fragrant tub set the tone for the bathroom during an evening party at the country cottage.

Although the bathroom isn't typically an area where people place furniture, it's not out of the question to add some country-inspired furnishings to the bathroom. For this space, a claw-foot bathtub -- particularly one that has been salvaged from the flea market and looks a bit beat up -- sits in the corner waiting to be drawn. Painted wooden cabinets of bright blue feature chicken wire fronts and hold towels and other necessities. A second-hand wing-back chair covered with a terrycloth cover acts as a receptacle for clothes or a spot to sit while soaking the feet in a hot tub.
