There are many ways to learn the German language.

German is one of Europe's most widely spoken languages and is an important language used in the business and scientific community. Learning this language can be an advantage. Whether you want to travel to Germany, communicate with German friends and relatives or you simply want to explore a new language, learning German is achievable through different means.

  1. Television

    • Watch television shows that you are familiar with translated into German. Since you will already be familiar with the scenes and dialogues from the show, you will have an idea of what the characters are saying in German. Well-loved American television shows such as "The Little House on the Prairie" has a version that is dubbed into German titled "Unsere Kleine Farm." You may buy "Unsere Kleine Farm" DVDs online.

    Books

    • Reading German-translated books which you have read in English will also be very helpful in learning German grammar and vocabulary. The popular Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling and "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint Exupery are also published in the German language. These books can be bought online. It will also be helpful if you have an English to German dictionary by your side while you are reading, as well as the English version of the book for comparison purposes.

    Podcasts

    • Podcasts are audio or video digital media files that can be downloaded from your computer. The online site slowgerman.com offers many audio files that you can listen to in areas of vocabulary and conversational German, as well as in areas of German film, music and culture. Another helpful site is pukkagerman.com, which has podcasts that teach colloquial German lingo and slang aimed to make it easier for you to communicate with German locals. They also teach funny German sayings, common idioms and proverbs. Each session also comes with a script and vocabulary list so you can read while you listen.

    Write an Online Diary

    • Lang-8.com is an interactive online site which allows you to write a diary in any language you prefer, which is then corrected by native speakers of that particular language. You can also correct other writer's diaries who are attempting to write in your native language. If you are writing your diary in the German language, native German speakers will help you and correct your grammatical errors. This site will enrich your grammar and at the same time give you a chance to make friends around the world.
