Ways to Scare Buzzards

Buzzards help the environment by cleaning up carcasses of dead animals. Unfortunately they can also pose a problem when they nest on top of homes and cause destruction to the building. Black buzzards are aggressive and don't only eat carrion, but actually kill livestock. This bird are protected so those having difficulties must learn creative and humane ways of removal.

Sound and Visual Deterrents

  • Protected through the North American Migratory Bird Act, buzzard-control techniques must be nonlethal unless a special permit has been obtained. Shooting, killing or causing physical harm to a buzzard may result in jail time, a fine or both. Using methods that combine sound and visual deterrents proves most effective. The best sounds include natural sounds of birds in distress paired with sounds of predator birds.

Goose Decoys

  • Geese, known to attack buzzards, prevent these birds from landing when they spot geese nearby. Strategically placed goose decoys will scare off buzzards and prevent them from settling down where they believe geese are present. Another effective decoy, a buzzard effigy, works effectively for many people. When a buzzard detects a deceased buzzard on the property, it encourages them to stay away.

Cow Bells

  • Miniature cow bells, hung 6 to 8 inches apart on bright pink leader wire will work to deter buzzards. Many people do not choose this method due to the constantly ringing bells. However, those who can find this method effective.

Sprinkler System

  • Placing a motion-activated sprinkler strategically aimed at the center of the roosting area will remove the buzzards. Use the jet setting on the sprinkler. Once setup, any movement from the buzzards will turn on the sprinkler, spraying the birds with water. This method, effective because buzzards do not like water, will encourage them to leave the area.

Loud Noises

  • Buzzards dislike loud, sudden noises. Effective measures include the use of a toy cap gun, yelling and loud hand clapping. When possible, shaking the tree branches where the buzzards roost while making a loud noise will help remove the birds who dislike the jarring and noise.
