A tropical-themed arch enhances a beach wedding.

One of the most memorable moments of a wedding -- the moment when each member of the couple says "I do" -- typically takes place beneath an arch. The arch will appear in many of the wedding photos and feature strongly in the memories of the couple and the guests. Decorate the arch to reflect the location, theme, colors and aesthetic of the wedding. A well-decorated arch will enhance but not distract from the wedding ceremony.

  1. Branches

    • The branches can be simple and thin or big and brushy.

Add a rustic feel to a wedding by decorating the arch with branches. You can use either plain dry branches -- grapevines are inexpensive, easy to work with and widely available -- or living whole branches. Consider choosing a kind of branch that has special meaning for you. For example, if you live in southern California but hail from Maine and miss the woods you grew up with, weave pine branches into the arch.

    Exotic Arch

    • Give the arch an exotic makeover by wrapping it completely with sari fabric, which is often shimmery, silky and woven through with golden or silver threads. Secure the fabric with dabs of hot glue if you are unconcerned about reuse. Alternately, use a needle and thread to stitch the fabric in place in key spots. Such an arch style is simple to execute compared to, say, an elaborate flower decor scheme. It is particularly suitable for a theme or destination wedding, for a well-traveled couple or for any couple that wants to add a pinch of the exotic to their special day.

    Single Color Flowers

    • Festoon the arch with dozens, if not hundreds, of flowers in a single color, either one of the wedding colors or a color that complements the wedding colors. You can use a single kind and color of flower or vary the type of flower while keeping the same color. For example, you could dress your all-white arch with baby's breath, roses, sweet peas and lilies-of-the-valley.

    Sea Fantasy Arch

    • Weave an aquatic fantasy arch if your aesthetic taste runs to the baroque or if the rest of the party decor is very plain and you want an elaborately decorated arch for balance. Thread silk scarves or fabric in metallic, shimmering shades of blue and green through the slats of the arch. String seashells and related items such as dried starfish, coral and sea horses on lengths of tiny, pearly beads and hang them from the top part of the arch so they dangle like charms on a bracelet. Also attach seashells to the sides of the arch.
