Societal Advantages of Computers
Computers have a huge impact on society. They are everywhere and are improving technologically every day. Although it can be argued that it is bad for society to rely so heavily on computers, their benefits contribute to the efficient functioning of society.
-
Education
-
Computers allow students to have access to a wider range of resources when studying. They are no longer limited to a library. Computers have created opportunities for more people to gain an education via online universities, which allow people access to higher education without having to come to a campus. This improves the overall education sector of society by preparing more people for the workforce and providing a higher standard of living.
Work
-
Computers open up an entire new job market. People are needed to make the computers, program and fix them. Computers create jobs for people in all areas of the workforce, thus decreasing unemployment.
-
Communication
-
Communication is a vital aspect of computers. Through computers, people are able to stay in touch and share information. This impacts society in that it makes people more accessible, saves time and, in some cases, money. It removed people from their reliance on landline phones and "snail mail" and introduced new ways of communication, such as social networking, instant messaging and Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP.
Business
-
With the ability that computers have to connect many people, businesses have been able to accelerate their growth. Globalization for businesses is easier with computers, and more of society is exposed to marketing strategies, such as advertisements and commercials. While TV, radio, newspapers and magazines have been the main source of advertising; it is likely in the 21st century that mobile advertising will beat out TV advertising because it gives advertisers access to an audience anytime and anywhere, touch technology engages consumers more since everything is right there at their fingertips and mobile ads are proving to be more effective than TV ads, according to the Business Insider website.
