Casino Card Games

Casino Card Gamesthumbnail
Blackjack is one of the most popular casino card games.

While many patrons hit the slots, most casinos offer a variety of card games on which players can wager. In most of these table games, a dealer distributes the cards, and you play against the casino in an attempt to buck a house edge that usually ranges from 2 to 6 percent. In poker, you test wits against other players.

      • This game is simple to learn and is one of the best to play if you know the correct basic strategy. The goal is to draw cards totaling 21 without going over or to get closer to 21 than the dealer. If you get an ace and a face card on the initial deal, you make a "blackjack" and usually are paid 3-to-2 on your wager. If you do not get 21 initially, you can draw as many cards as you wish. If you go over 21, you bust and lose the hand. Ties count as a push and bets are returned.

      Poker

      • This game comes in many forms, the most popular of which is Texas Hold'em. Most casinos offer cash games and tournaments. In cash games, players buy in for an amount of their choosing and can leave whenever they want. In tournaments, the participants play until one player wins all the chips, and a percentage of the players earn money based on how well they finished. Other poker games dealt in casinos include Pot-Limit Omaha, Stud, Omaha Hi-Lo and HORSE. In Texas Hold'em, you should look to be aggressive with strong hands such as ace-ace, king-king or queen-queen and try to flop a set with lower pairs such as five-five or three-three. In any poker game, you should take into account the odds of making a winning hand before calling bets.

      Bacarrat

      • This game preferred by fictional British superspy James Bond requires little strategy, making it one of the simpler games to play. Two hands are dealt -- the player and the banker -- and gamblers can wager on either one. The goal is to be closest to a total of nine, with face cards counting as zero and other cards counting the numerical value on their face. Hands do not bust; instead, any totals above 10 only count the single digit. Table rules determine whether a hand draws a third card after the initial two-card deal. Both the player and banker hands always stand on eight and nine and draw on zero, one and two. Players can bet on either hand or wager on a tie.

      Other Games

      • In Three Card Poker, players try to make a better three-card poker hand than the dealer and can earn big payoffs for making a straight flush or three of a kind. Players also earn bonuses for making high hands in Caribbean Stud, where they get five cards on the deal and are allowed to see one of the dealer's five cards before placing additional bets. Let It Ride requires players to put up three bets initially, but they can remove two of these bets as cards are revealed if they do not like the makeup of their hand.
