Costume Ideas for the 80s for a Decades Day

If you need an 80s costume for your high school's Decades Day, why not let the teen stars of the 80s be your fashion guide? The 80s were filled with "teen angst" movies about the wonders and woes of adolescence. Take your inspiration from these characters--two from the "popular" group, two from the not-so-popular group, and one in a group all his own--and make a totally awesome costume!

"Ferris Bueller's Day Off"

  • Everybody at school (well, almost everybody) loves Ferris Bueller and his ability to get away with anything. Recreate the famous scene of Ferris singing The Beatles' "Twist and Shout" on a parade float by carrying a microphone and wearing an animal print vest, a white T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers.

Famous Ferris quote: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

"The Breakfast Club"

  • Claire Standish is one of the most popular people at school, according to Claire Standish. Dress up like the "Princess" member of the Breakfast Club by wearing a pink top, a wraparound skirt with a belt, tall boots, and diamond stud earrings. Claire's diamonds are real, but yours can be fake!

Famous Claire quote: "Do you know how popular I am? I am so popular. Everybody loves me so much at this school."

"Say Anything"

  • Will the school valedictorian want anything to do with the lowly (but lovable) Lloyd Dobler? Pour your heart out Lloyd-style by carrying a boombox over your head and wearing a long coat with the sleeves pushed up to the elbows, a T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers (bonus points if you play Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" from your boombox).

Famous Lloyd quote: "I gave her my heart, and she gave me a pen."

"Some Kind of Wonderful"

  • Watts is one tough cookie--so tough, in fact, that her best friend doesn't realize she's in love with him. Rock your tomboy side by carrying drumsticks and wearing a leather jacket, a white T-shirt, sneakers, jeans, and gloves with the fingertips cut off.

Famous Watts quote: "You break his heart, I break your face."

"Teen Wolf"

  • For Scott Howard, finding out he's a werewolf is all fun and games until he finds he may be losing his real friends--and himself. Go wild like this Hairy Hoop Star by carrying a basketball and wearing a werewolf mask, a basketball uniform, and sneakers.

Famous Scott Howard quote: (admiring his werewolf self in the mirror): "You are an animal! Woo!"
