Suggestions for Housewarming Thank You Notes
Your housewarming party was a success. Friends, old and new, helped you celebrate a new beginning in a new community. The party may have been an informal one where guests shared a potluck meal with you. Alternatively, you may have hosted an elaborate dinner party. In either case, most of the guests may have brought gifts. Although you thanked them at the party, you should sit down and write a note expressing your appreciation.
-
Getting Organized
-
Leave the gifts out for at least one day. Do not remove any of the cards attached to the gifts. After the housewarming party, collect and organize these cards then take out your list of all the guests who attended the housewarming party. Beside each name, write a brief description of the gift. For example: "Elizabeth and John Davies: landscape print by local artist." Double-check the information with your spouse or partner.
Writing Simple Messages
-
Write from the heart and keep the notes simple. In most cases, two to four sentences are appropriate for handwritten cards. For example, "Paul and I are delighted with the lovely clock you gave us. It will have an honored place in our new home. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. We look forward to seeing you at the company picnic." Alternatively, you could write: "You selected the perfect gift for our new decor. The Mexican folk art piece is beautiful and will complement the other accessories in the family room. We will always value your gift, as well as your friendship."

Writing More Detailed Messages
-
If the gift was particularly thoughtful or substantial, mention its specifics and how you plan to use it. For example: "John and I love the hand-carved bookends you gave us as a housewarming gift. We plan to use them to hold our favorite books. Each time we look at the bookends, we will recall the wonderful evenings we spent with you and the other members of the book club. We hope to start or join a book club in our new community."
Providing More Personal Notes
-
Write a longer, more detailed note to close friends and relatives. For example: "Peter and I are overwhelmed by your generosity and thoughtfulness. We will always treasure the beautiful Italian tablecloths you gave us as a housewarming gift. We have many fond memories of the Sunday dinners we enjoyed at your home. We hope you and Uncle Steve will visit us often. This time, I'll be cooking the Sunday dinner and using one of the new tablecloths."
