Chicken wings are a delicious finger food.

Finger foods and snacks are the sort of dishes you want for a party, family get together or other celebration. Offering finger foods allows guests to eat while mingling, and you can serve more choices than at a sit-down dinner. Typical snacks and finger foods include nuts, fruits and vegetables, meat dishes, dips with chips or crackers and sweet snacks. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Nuts

    • Mixed nuts are a good snack for any event. You can offer plain nuts or try this easy recipe to offer spiced mixed nuts. Combine ½ cup packed brown sugar, ½ tsp. salt, ½ tsp. cinnamon, ¼ tsp. allspice, 1/8 tsp. nutmeg and 1/8 tsp. cloves in a microwaveable bowl. Add 4 ½ tsp. water and microwave for 1 minute. Stir the mixture, then add the nuts and stir well. Return the bowl to the microwave and cook for 4 to 5 minutes. Spread the nuts on a greased baking sheet, separated. Let the nuts cool before serving.

    Fruits & Veggies

    • Fruits and vegetables are a lighter finger food option and can be served with different dips. For a fruit dip, mix 1 (8 oz.) package of cream cheese with 1 can marshmallow crème. The dip tastes delicious with apple slices, grapes and strawberries. A ranch dip tastes good for a raw vegetable tray. Combine ¾ cup plain yogurt, ½ cup mayonnaise and 1 (1 oz.) package ranch dressing mix in a bowl and mix well before serving.

    Meat

    • Finger foods made from meat, like pigs in a blanket or meatballs, provide sustenance. Chicken wings are a popular finger food, especially since you can make them as spicy as you want. Try these Dijon chicken wings that have just a hint of spice. Melt 2/3 cup butter and mix with ¼ cup Dijon mustard. Roll 20 chicken wings in the mustard mix, then roll in 1 ¼ cups seasoned bread crumbs. Put the chicken in a 9-by-13-inch dish, cover with 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese and bake at 400 degrees F for 30 minutes, flipping the wings once.

    Chips and Crackers

    • A selection of cheese and crackers works well for finger food. With chips, serve a dip such as guacamole, salsa or French onion. Potato chips go well with French onion dips, which are also easy to make. Mix a packet of French onion dip with an 8 oz. package of sour cream. If you want a lower-calorie option, use low-fat sour cream.

    Sweet

    • Many desserts, from cookies to candy, work as finger food. Muddy Buddies (also called Puppy Chow) is a tasty finger food or sweet snack. Melt 1 bag chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl, then mix in 2 cups peanut butter. Stir in 1 box rice Chex cereal and mix well. Add 3 cups powdered sugar and stir until the cereal is fully coated with the sugar. Transfer to a different bowl to serve.
