Matching Icing Colors

Using different colors can enhance the look of your baked goods. Mixing an exact shade of icing can sometimes be tricky since each person sees color a little bit differently. Before starting, it is helpful to have a picture or color swatch as an example of the color you are trying to make so that you can compare colors. Start with just a couple drops of each color. Continue to add more, alternating your colors, until you reach the exact color you are trying to achieve.
Always begin with a small amount of icing to make sure you can determine the correct color proportions. However, once you are satisfied, mix enough icing for everything you need as it may be hard to obtain the exact color a second time for touch-ups.
Making Buttercream Icing

Buttercream icing is simple to make. When coloring it a periwinkle shade -- or any other color in the purple/violet range -- make sure you use milk (instead of water or vegetable oil) to avoid your icing having blue casts. If you are using fondant or another kind of icing you shouldn't have to worry about this issue.

Mixing Color

The basic periwinkle icing shade is made by mixing equal amounts of blue and purple. If using coloring gels or drops with a wide range of colors the blue should be a royal blue or on the brighter end of the scale, while the purple should be a regal purple or violet shade. If you are using basic food coloring remember that blue and red make purple. You can either create two batches of icing -- one purple and one blue and mix them together -- or create the blue icing and slowly add red drops until it achieves your desired color.
Light or Dark

If you are aiming for a lighter shade of periwinkle, add white to your mixture to thin out the color. Darken your mixture by adding more blue.
