Grants for Low-Income Women
Women with low income can find themselves overwhelmed, having to overcome assorted obstacles ranging from housing to health, transportation to a job. If she's a single mother, her demands are even greater. Perhaps the best thing a woman with low income can do for herself is try to increase her income. She can do so by improving her education, and grants are available to women for this purpose. She should consider getting education and training to work in industries that have the highest demand for workers.

Nursing Scholarships

Nurses are well paid, and grants are available to help with training. With the aging population growing, there's high demand in the health care industry for nurses, who sometimes can work either full or part time. The National Black Nurses Association provides undergraduate scholarships for black women entering the nursing profession. Grant amounts of up to $2,000 can be used for tuition or books. Grants for Registered Nurses

The March of Dimes promotes excellence in nursing care to mothers and babies through its nursing scholarships. The organization provides financial assistance to registered nurses who are enrolled in a graduate program in maternal-child nursing. Application forms can be downloaded from the March of Dimes website (marchofdimes.com/nursing) and are generally accepted by the start of the year.

Jeannette Rankin Women's Scholarships

Get a study grant to enter a career you'll enjoy. Low-income women age 35 and older who'd like to get their bachelor's degree can apply to the Jeannette Rankin Women's Scholarship Fund for assistance (rankinfoundation.org). The organization also provides scholarships for women pursuing vocational technical training or an associate degree. Online courses are acceptable as long as the proposed school is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools or one of six regional accreditation agencies.
Grants for Emergencies

The Mayer Foundation (foundationcenter.org/grantmaker/mayer/) assists women in financial distress. It provides grants of up to $5,000 to cover unforeseen emergencies, which can include job loss, health care expenses, transportation or housing help or needs for children. Applications are accepted throughout the year. You simply need to write an introductory letter. The board meets every three months.
