Great Birthday Gifts for Bosses

Keep birthday gifts nice but not personal for a boss' birthday.

Your boss has a birthday coming up and you'd like to give him a gift. Be mindful of the present you select. Even the nicest boss will expect a gift to fall within the confines of your professional relationship. Think in terms of the type of gift you might get a client, something useful yet not too personal or expensive. Most of all, don't expect anything in return when it's time for a raise or an office perk. Give a gift from your heart or don't give one at all.

  1. Professional Accessories

    • Every boss likes to look polished, so get your boss a professional accessory. Get her name engraved on a nice pen or a metal pen drive. Consider a portfolio or a day calendar with a leather cover. Stick to professional leather colors, such as neutrals like brown, black and navy. Get something for her desk, such as a paperweight, desk clock, stand-up calendar or silver photo. Try to match the accessory to the decor of her office. For example, don't get an ultra-modern clock for a traditional-style office.

    Travel Accessories

    • If your boss travels a lot, give him something he'll be able to use on the road. A leather passport cover with his monogram stamped on the front makes an elegant gift. A travel alarm clock is handy in hotel rooms, especially for all the times when the front desk or automated system doesn't wake up guests on time. If you can chip in with co-workers, consider some noise-cancelling headphones. Good ones cost between $100 and $400, and they turn noisy flights into a few hours of blissful quiet.

    Food

    • Bosses like to eat out and take people to lunch and dinner. Get your boss a gift card to her favorite restaurant for the times when she doesn't have to have a company meal. Order fresh doughnuts from a gourmet bakery so she can start her birthday on a sweet note. Send her a fresh fruit bouquet that she can enjoy all day. Get your co-workers to sign up for a food-of-the-month gift, such as wine or cheese. She may even be tempted to bring some in to share.

    Coffee

    • Bosses guzzle coffee like it's the elixir of work life, so keep your boss filled to the brim with a nice assortment of coffees and coffee gear. Buy him a gift basket with assorted small packages of gourmet coffee, such as dark roast and French roast. Sprinkle in some flavored coffees and biscotti. A special coffee mug is a nice gift, but avoid mugs with cute sayings. Get a personal coffee maker as a group present from the gang, such as a gadget that will make just one cup of coffee at a time that he can keep right by his desk.
