Indoor Lighting Ideas for Amateur Photographers
Indoor lighting can sometimes make a horrendous photo if not adjusted. Fluorescent office lights in particular are infamous for providing bad lighting. If you find yourself in this situation or just want to practice indoor photos, there are several techniques you can try to increase the quality of light.
-
Multiple Light Setup
-
You can use several lights to create an acceptable image. Place one light about 30 degrees to a subject's side. Place another light farther from the the subject at about 30 degrees on his opposite side. This will illuminate the subject and result in soft shadows. Having only one light results in a more dramatic look, which may be desirable.
China Ball
-
A China ball is a large paper sphere, typically sold at home decoration stores. These lights are typically a novelty light for homeowners and create very soft light. Simply place a bulb in the included socket and mount it to a wall. You can adjust its brightness by varying the distance away from the subject. China balls can be purchased from a local decoration store for around $20.

Windows
-
Windows produce an exceptional quality of light and are available almost everywhere. Place a subject next to one and have them turn slightly toward the light. This will add a very soft fill light and create a dynamic subject.
Candles and Other Lights
-
You also can use special light sources to create unusual effects. Candles in particular can create interesting photos. Try placing several candles in the background to blur them out and create orbs of light. Additionally, black lights and other colored bulbs can create similar effects.
