It is important to maintain a balanced life.

Work is a necessity in order to keep receiving those paychecks. However important it may be to be an attentive worker, it is also important to maintain a fruitful life balance. Family, friends, and even your own health and happiness should never be taken for granted. Waiting until tomorrow might just be too late to spare your health and family relationships.

  1. Adjust Your Goals

    • Spent a few minutes reflecting on what is most important to you, including both professional and personal goals. Decide what type of promotions you want to receive at work and what activities you would like to do with your spouse and children. Take into account any requests from your family regarding what school or social events they would like you to be involved in. Make sure you include what is important to them in your schedule.

    Turn the Boss Down

    • You may think it is difficult to say "no" to your boss when he asks you to stay late or to add on another project to your already busy schedule. There are times, however, when the boss asks too much from you and the time required to fulfill the requests would get in the way of your family goals. Clearly explain to your boss that you are not able to take on the task, but suggest alternatives, if these are available.

    Quality Exercise Time

    • Finding time to exercise can be difficult while working long hours and maintaining a household. Exercising is also a necessity for overall good health that will keep you out of the doctor's office and earning those paychecks. One way to find time to exercise is to involve family or friends and use the time to socialize while exercising. Get a group together to play a sport, either in a gym or outside. If you do not like sports, you can take everyone to a dance lesson or for a walk in the park. Whatever the activity, it will provide a valuable workout to get the body moving, as well as find some social bonding time with those closest to you.

    Telecommuting

    • A new way to help balance work and life is to incorporate telecommuting into your work schedule. Talk to your employer about the option to work from home, either after hours or a few days during the work week. This can be most beneficial if you have a long drive into work, as it can cut down on the time spent in the car and can provide more hours be more productive during the work day. Try working at a coffee house or another location around town to give your body and mind a refreshing change of scenery.
