The Average Bathroom Remodel
Improving bathroom space can involve a makeover that is relatively inexpensive. Changing wall color, flooring and one or two fixtures constitutes a basic makeover. Adding accent items, such as shelving, towels or a new mirror, easily make a big difference in many cases. If you want to extend the remodeling in the future, invest time in figuring out a basic remodel and a room layout that will support future upgrades. Does this Spark an idea?

Examine the Fixtures
-
Evaluate the needs of the space. Look at the condition of the toilet, bathtub, vanity counter and sink and shower, for example. Decide which fixtures are in need of replacement first. Changing out an older sink and bathtub finished in blue or yellow from the 1970s, for example, and changes the look of the whole room. You can find replacement fixtures at close-out sales or in the classifieds that are very affordable.
Change the Color
-
Decide how to improve color in the space. For example, you might dislike green or yellow walls. Adding cream-colored wall paint, white fixtures and neutral towels can make a huge difference. Look at the floor's color and materials and its impact on the room. Replacing old tile with inexpensive sheet vinyl flooring is preferable to keeping a worn or odd-colored floor. Keep in mind that the floor must look clean to create a clean feeling for the bathroom.

Define a Workable Budget
-
Figure out a budget you can afford. Set aside $2,500, for example, for an inexpensive do-it-yourself remodel with lower-quality materials. Spend closer to $3,500 to get nicer flooring and well-made cabinetry. A high-end bathroom remodel, completed by professionals, easily can cost $20,000 to $30,000 or more. You can trim labor costs when hiring professionals by doing some of the basic work yourself. You might, for instance, take out an old bathtub or toilet before you have a plumber install the new fixtures.
Buy Good-Quality Materials
-
Decide the quality of the fixtures and hardware you want. While an inexpensive toilet might seem like a good place to trim the budget, it might not last as long or work as well you hope. Size and shape of the toilet make an impact on even the most average bathroom space. To be practical, it's better to purchase a less-costly vanity cabinet or sink vs. a cheaper toilet, tub or shower.
Allow Ample Time
-
Consider time for the remodel completion. If you want to makeover a bathroom for guests coming into town, allow 10 days minimum. Plumbers and carpenters can run into tricky situations with rotting floor joists and decayed pipes when tearing out old fixtures. Avoid planning a three-day remodel, for example, to be on the safe side.
