Other free software packages with a remote desktop connection feature include TeamViewer, LogMeIn, UltraVNC and TightVNC.
TeamViewer 6 has free and paid versions. It is compatible with Mac OS, Windows and Linux. TeamViewer's remote desktop connection feature does not require a software download but there is an available download, which includes more features such as unattended access. It has encryption, file transfer capabilities, remote reboot, video chat and the ability to remotely share your desktop for presentations. There is also a mobile version of the software for iOS.
LogMeIn Free 4 is available for Mac OS and Windows. It includes encryption, a copy and paste feature and chat. There is an optional upgrade to Pro, which includes sound, remote printing and file transfer.
UltraVNC can connect to a Windows machine from a web browser on any operating system. Software must be installed on the computer that will be sharing its desktop. It offers encryption, file transfer and chat features.
TightVNC version 2 can be installed on Windows and Unix machines. It works well with slower Internet connections. There is a portable version of the software but not a mobile version. The Windows version allows file transfers and desktop scaling.
