The Kresge Foundation Grants
According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, there are over 1.5 million nonprofit and charitable organizations in the United States. The Kresge Foundation in Troy, Mich., is one of the most prolific. The foundation is best known for grants that support the creation and sustainability of other nonprofits.

Eligibility

To receive a Kresge Foundation grant your organization must be registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The foundation does not award grants to individuals. Eligible institutions include government entities, religious organizations, colleges and universities, hospitals and international organizations. In 2010 the foundation approved 481 grant awards totaling $158 million.

The foundation awards grants based on specific criteria, one of which includes the potential impact your organization has on its community. The Kresge Foundation assesses such things as how your organization supports and/or betters low-income individuals, new or innovative approaches to address the community's needs, and promotion of environmental conservation.

Types of Grants

Grants are based on the needs of the organization. The Kresge Foundation is primarily focused on nonprofit organizations that support arts and culture, community development, education, the environment, and health and human services. Grants are usually awarded for facilities and can include grants for the acquisition and construction of facilities, land construction, renovations and equipment. Grants may also be awarded for operating support and seed money for a group to plan, market and create their own nonprofit.

To apply for a Kresge Foundation grant, a nonprofit organization must submit a letter of intent detailing its mission, along with an explanation of how the organization meets the goals and criteria of the foundation, and how it can benefit from a grant.
