Apartments are located in multi-storied buildings that often contain more than three units. They originated as a way for young men and women to afford living in urban areas. Lofts were created when owners of old factories and commercial buildings could no longer support modern technology, so they converted the space into residential accommodations.
Both lofts and apartments are residential spaces designed to accommodate individuals, roommates and families. The size and location of the residence is going to determine the price and how many people can live there. Both an apartment and loft feature numerous basic amenities, including a living area, bathroom and kitchen, with all the major appliances. The upscale buildings that house apartments and lofts may include swimming pools, fitness centers and common areas.
While the interior structures of both lofts and apartments can be remodeled, the walls in lofts can be easily rearranged to accommodate a current tenant's needs and wants. The finishings, such as wires and ducts may be located behind drywall in an apartment, and lofts may have their plumbing and mechanical systems exposed. Though both apartments and lofts can be found in urban areas, it's is rare to find traditional lofts in suburbs and small towns.
Because of the wide open spaces in lofts, these areas may double as a living and work space. Lofts offer flexibility, and tenants can arrange their living spaces without worrying about walls or divides. As most lofts have an industrial background, ceilings are often higher and areas are well lit. Since lofts are often refurbished factories and commercial buildings, they may feature refinished hardwood floors and brick walls.
Traditional apartments have individual rooms that are separated by walls that extend from floors to ceilings. Apartments may be a better fit for families, as the walls offer additional privacy. If you need to share a space with roommates, apartments may be a better fit in order to reduce noise levels. Because apartments were built specifically for residential living, they may have better heating, cooling and ventilation systems and be able to accommodate more electrical appliances.
