Knowing what to talk about at the table is very important.

The awkward silence that can fall over a table during mealtimes when people have run out of things to say can be extremely uncomfortable. This is particularly the case if you're hosting a dinner party or meeting people for the first time. To ensure this doesn't happen to you, remember some conversation topics just in case. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Traveling

    • Most people have traveled somewhere domestically or internationally and experienced something they're more than willing to share. The best way to approach this topic is to ask whether anyone has had the opportunity to travel rather than if anyone has been overseas. There are many people who would like to travel but haven't had the chance. If there aren't a lot of travelers sitting around the table, ask where they would like to go.

    The News

    • An easy topic of conversation that almost everyone is familiar with are the current affairs on the news. Everybody has an opinion about the most recent headline, the latest celebrity breakdown or the game on the weekend. Be wary of delving into political issues or subjects that people can be opinionated or sensitive about as you might find your enjoyable discussion sink into a heated debate.

    Likes and Dislikes

    • Most table conversations falter when all the common topics have been spoken about and nobody has anything more to add. Fortunately every person at the table has a wide range of likes and dislikes and topics that interest them that they'd be happy to share. You can ask general questions like: "What is their favorite/least favorite film of the year?" and "What is your favorite/least favorite type of music?" or "Who was the worst/best boss/co-worker you ever had?"

    Hypothetical Questions

    • A light and fun mood can be created around the table by asking hypothetical questions. Questions about how a person would react in a dangerous situation or one where a choice has to be made. Some classic questions are: "If you could have any superpower, at the expense of one of your five senses, what would you choose and which sense would you be prepared to lose?" and "If you were stranded on an island and could only bring five items with you, what would you bring?"
