Projects Using Mountain Dew Bottles

Soda bottles, such as Mountain Dew bottles, can contribute to polluting the environment if not recycled. Recycle your old Mountain Dew bottles into different types of projects around the house. These projects can be used for a variety of purposes. They can be used as science fair projects or simply to decorate your home.

  1. Volcano

    • Create a volcano out of a Mountain Dew bottle. Place the bottle in the center of a large bowl to avoid spilling. Using a spoon, pour in enough baking soda to cover the bottom of the bottle. Drop in a few ounces of glitter. Mix ¼ cup of vinegar, two drops of dishwashing liquid and a few ounces of food coloring in a mug. Pour the mixture in the bottle using the funnel, then step back. The mixture will create a combination that causes it to erupt out of the bottle. This project is perfect for grade school science fair projects.

    Bird Feeder

    • A Mountain Dew bottle's green color will naturally attract birds to your feeder. Remove the label from a two liter bottle. Use a nail to poke a hole on opposite sides of the bottom of the bottle, just before the bends in the bottom. Insert a wooden dowel in the hole for the bird perch. With scissors cut two small U-shape holes above each perch for bird to access the seed. Use the nail to punch two holes on opposite sides of the bottle near the top. Slide a piece of string through the holes to hang your bird feeder. Fill the bottle with bird seed and hang it.

    Coin Purse

    • Two 20 ounce Mountain Dew bottles can make a simple coin purse. Cut off the bottoms of the bottles using scissors or a knife. Use a small nail file or sand paper to even off the rough edges of the cuts. Buy a small metal zipper about six and a half inches long. Use a small pin to poke holes every eighth of an inch around the edges of bottle bottoms. These holes should be about an eighth of an inch down from the edge. Place the two bottles halves on top of each other. Sew the connecting back of the zipper to the bottle bottoms. Hand sew the zipper sides to the bottle bottoms using the poked out holes.

    Bottle Tornado

    • A bottle tornado is a great science fair project or can make a great decoration for the home. Take the caps off of two 2 liter Mountain Dew bottles. Drill a half inch hole in the center of the caps. Place the caps on each of each other and line up the holes. Wrap duct tape around the caps to hold them in place. Cut of excessive tape with a pair of scissors. Screw the caps onto one of the bottles and set it aside. Place the other bottle under a faucet and fill it to about ¾ full. Drop food coloring or confetti into the water for decoration. Place the empty bottle with the double cap onto the water filled bottle and screw them together. Wrap duct tape around the two ends to hold them together. Turn the bottles upside down with a slight spin to create the tornado. Craft shops sell "bottle tornado" adapters which simplifies the process.
