Function
-
Retin-A contains tretinoin, which is an acid form of vitamin A, states Antiaging-Systems.com. This ingredient eliminates fine lines, reduces deep wrinkles, thins thick skin, and smooths blemishes in approximately six weeks. Retin-A increases circulation in the skin for faster cell turnover, improving the skin's tone and texture at a quicker rate. Reducing the appearance of stretch marks by boosting collagen production, this agent is also used by some patients after cosmetic surgery to speed skin healing.
Instructions
-
Retin-A is a potent medication that should be used with care--too much can easily irritate delicate facial skin. Use Retin-A only once a day at night before you go to bed, and discontinue use of astringents, toners, harsh soaps, scrubs, and masks. Wash the face with a gentle facial cleanser, and wait about 30 minutes before applying Retin-A. Squeeze a small amount about the size of a pea to cover the entire face, advises GoodSkin.eu, avoiding the eye and mouth area. When you wash your face the next morning, follow with your regular moisturizer.

According to "The New York Times," prescription-strength Retin-A products include brands such as Avage, Renova, Retin-A Micro, and Tazorac. Retinol is an over-the-counter form of Retin-A found in drug store and department store skin care brands. Since 2003, "The New York Times" also reports there have been more than 300 products containing Retin-A introduced to the market.
Warning
-
According to Drugs.com, if you suffer from eczema or psoriasis, Retin-A should not be applied to these areas during an outbreak, because it may cause skin sensitivity. When used to treat acne, it may make the condition worse before it gets better. Retin-A also makes skin more sensitive to sunlight and UV lamps. Therefore, do not go to the tanning bed if you are using Retin-A--and always wear a sunscreen of SPF-15 or higher when exposing the skin to sunlight. Women who are pregnant or nursing must inform their doctor before using Retin-A.
