A kitchen island can greatly increase the convenience and flexibility of a kitchen layout. Because it is accessible from all sides, a kitchen island provides flexible counter space on top and extensive storage space underneath. You can create an effective kitchen island by placing standard kitchen cabinets back to back.
To make a kitchen island using kitchen cabinets, you will need to get some lower-tier cabinets that are the right size for the space in the center of your kitchen. By positioning the cabinets back to back, you can cover up their unattractive backs and provide conveniently available cabinet space on both sides of the kitchen island. You can make the island bigger or smaller, depending on how many cabinets you include and what size you use.
The larger your kitchen is, the more flexibility you will have when deciding on both the size and location of your island. In a small kitchen, you will probably have to position the island in the center to provide enough room on all sides for traffic flow without any inconvenience. In a larger kitchen, you may have some choice about where to place the island, depending on how you use the space. Another option is to mount the island on casters so you can easily move it around the kitchen as needed.
A kitchen island can provide added counter and storage space to any kitchen that is lacking in these elements. A well-designed island can turn a drab kitchen into a beautiful workplace that is convenient and visually interesting. You can hang a ceiling-mounted pot rack over the center of a kitchen island for easily accessible culinary tools. Because the cabinets underneath the kitchen island are accessible from all sides, an island provides the maximum amount of convenient storage area in a limited space.
Some cabinets may not be appropriate for making a kitchen island. If you use cabinets that were designed for an upper wall-mounted tier, they may not be the right size. If you have a small kitchen, you may find that the presence of an island in its center constricts your mobility and gets in the way. If you use cabinets that don't match the cabinets that are already in your kitchen, you may find the different styles or colors clash with one another.
