The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has a subsidized housing program that provides partial or full rent payments for qualified applicants. Ohio has regional HUD offices located throughout the state. Although the program is available to everyone in the state, not every county has a HUD office. Contact your local social services division to find the regional office in charge of your county. There is often a waiting list for applicants, which may be as long as one year or more. You can request an application packet that explains how the program works and what is required for approval.

The agency offers help with rent in Ohio through a Prevention, Retention, and Contingency (PRC) program. The program is available once a year to qualifying applicants for help with many issues, including rent. The PRC program is designed to assist families when a financial crisis occurs. Each county governs its own PRC funds, and the criteria for acceptance will vary from county to county. Check with your local Job and Family Services division to fill out an application.
Society of St. Vincent de Paul

The various Catholic churches around Ohio are members of the national Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Through this community outreach program, the churches offer assistance for food, clothing and numerous other needs. The organization also helps with utilities and rent. You must provide picture identification and Social Security cards for every member of the household. You also must show proof of income and residency, such as a lease or utility bill. While the Society of St. Vincent de Paul tries to help everyone who comes to them, funds are often limited. If the organization cannot provide assistance, it may be able to refer you to someone who can help.
