Won't Turn On/Heat

If your Whirlpool dryer won't turn on, see if you have it turned on and press the "Start" button again. You must fully close the dryer door for the dryer to start. Select a drying cycle, and verify that the dial is past the "Off" setting. Only plug in your dryer to a 240-volt power supply, and only use a time-delay fuse. Check your circuit breaker, and reset if tripped. Replace any blown fuse. If you own a gas dryer and the dryer won't heat, see if the gas valve is in the "On" position and that you have gas in your tank.

Never remove clothing before the end of the cycle to prevent wrinkles in clothing. Never overload the dryer, or drying your clothes can take longer. Properly sort heavy and light clothing because lighter clothing take less time to dry than heavier clothing. Remove any clogs or dirt from the exhaust vent, lint screen and exhaust hood to improve drying times. Only use the proper exhaust vent length and diameter (4 inches). Keep fabric softener sheets from clogging the grille. Only use a heated dry setting, not the fluff or air dry settings. Properly ventilate your dryer, and operate it in temperatures at or above 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Verify that your dryer is level if your cycle is ending too soon.

You'll normally hear a clicking sound on a gas dryer, especially if you haven't used it in while. If your Whirlpool dryer is vibrating, see if you have installed the four legs and that the floor beneath the dryer is level. Place a bubble level on your dryer to check if it's level. Break up any balled-up clothing, and remove any objects like change or buttons from the tub.

The timer generally moves slowly if you have the dryer set to the "Timed," "Air" or "Automatic Drying" settings. Clean the lint screen if you have lint on your clothing. Use fabric softener to reduce stains on your clothing. A new dryer usually emits an odor that will go away after the first cycle.
