The Width of Queen Size & King Size Beds

For most of human history, people slept on beds they made themselves or had custom-made by a nearby artisan. Standardized bed sizes became common with the spread of mass production. Today, the queen and king size beds are the standard option for a couple who plans to share a bed. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Queen Bed

    • A standard queen mattress is 60 inches wide, offering each sleeper 30 inches of individual sleeping space, which is roughly two-thirds the space offered by a twin bed alone. The "olympic queen" mattress is a slightly larger variation that measures 66 inches across, or 33 inches of personal space per occupant.

    King Bed

    • A standard king bed is the same length as a queen but 76 inches wide, which gives each sleeper 38 inches of sleeping space, approximately the same bed width they would enjoy with a twin bed each. The California king is a taller, narrower bed that offers 36 inches per sleeper -- a total of 72 inches wide.

    European Sizes

    • In Europe, a standard queen mattress is 25 inches wide. It's shorter than a North American queen -- but wider - offering each sleeper as much individual space as a California king. The European king bed is 60 inches wide, the same width as a North American queen mattress.

    Asian Sizes

    • A king bed build to Asian specifications is 72 inches wide, offering 36 inches of space to each occupant. Asian bed sizes do not include a standardized queen option.

    Super Sizes

    • Increased interest in larger mattresses has led to the development of oversize king mattresses. In North America, the Grand King is 80 inches wide, offering nearly as much space to each occupant as he would enjoy sleeping alone on a full mattress. The European equivalent of the grand is the Super King, measuring 72 inches across, just like an Asian king or a North American California king.
