Locksmiths must have many different kinds of supplies available.

Locksmiths install and change locking systems for people, manufacture and distribute keysets for businesses and help people who have misplaced their keys gain access into their homes or cars. If you want to work for or manage a locksmith company, there are certain supplies that every locksmith professional should be equipped with on the job.

  1. Key Machine

    • Locksmiths often must create or duplicate keys for people or companies, and thus every locksmith must have a key machine handy to create new keys or to duplicate pre-existing keys. There are many different types of key machines that locksmiths can choose from; some machines provide assistance for the key-making process while others enable the locksmith to do it manually. Choices include automatic key machines, manual key machines, code machines, high-security key machines, punch machines and semi-automatic key machines.

    Deadbolts

    • Locksmiths must be prepared to competently and effectively install new lock and key systems. To adequately assist customers, locksmiths must have deadbolts available along with the essential tools -- such as screws and screwdrivers -- needed to install deadbolts onto doors. There are different deadbolts for commercial buildings and for residential buildings, and thus locksmiths must be equipped with both types of deadbolts. Also, so that they do not run out of deadbolts on a job, locksmiths should have a sufficient number of each type.

    Rekeying Kit

    • For customers who wish to change the locks on their house or business, locksmiths must have rekeying kits readily available. Rekeying kits are kits that enable locksmiths to use the old key to remove the old lock cylinder plug from the door and to use new keys to create a new lock cylinder plug. Although the specific parts and details are different for each rekeying kit, kits usually consists of multiple sizes, several different pieces for each size and numerous springs and pins.

    Car-Opening Tools

    • Locksmiths must possess various car-opening tools so they can effectively help customers access their motor vehicles after being locked out or misplacing their keys. Different tools are required to open different types of cars, and so locksmiths should have multiple car-opening tools available, such as wrenches, pliers, picks, slim jims and long-reach tools. Additionally, locksmiths must have car-opening lights to shine on the locks and help them as they determine how to most effectively open the vehicle, along with car-opening manuals that provide advice and instructions for opening different types of vehicles.
