Amethyst was used by ancient Greeks to avoid drunkenness. The word "amethyst" comes from the Greek word "amethystos," meaning "not intoxicated." The Greeks associated amethyst with Dionysus, the god of wine and debauchery, and the purple color was said to be wine stains. Revelers would sometimes drink from amethyst cups to avoid doing something they might later regret while drinking. A pinch of ground amethyst mixed in wine is said to have a sobering effect.
