Amethyst is thought by some to be used for protection and healing.

For centuries, amethyst has been considered a powerful and mysterious gemstone. Known for its ability to bring clarity of thought and wisdom, this purple crystal decorated the robes of Jewish high priests and adorned Catholic crosses, and was highly prized by European royalty. Throughout the ages, people have also discovered what they believe are protective and healing properties associated with amethyst.

  1. Preventing Drunkenness

Amethyst was used by ancient Greeks to avoid drunkenness.

The word "amethyst" comes from the Greek word "amethystos," meaning "not intoxicated." The Greeks associated amethyst with Dionysus, the god of wine and debauchery, and the purple color was said to be wine stains. Revelers would sometimes drink from amethyst cups to avoid doing something they might later regret while drinking. A pinch of ground amethyst mixed in wine is said to have a sobering effect. It is also believed to help quell addictions.

    Protection

    • Amethyst was valued for its purported protective qualities. Farmers kept it to protect their crops. Some people used it for personal protection against wild animals, or against the enemy during battle. Still others believed that amethyst held the power to drive out evil spirits. It is used today in many protection charms, and to block out negative energy during spells and rituals.

    Clarity of Mind

    • Amethyst is believed to protect against seduction, including corruption of thought, as it is closely linked with the spiritual realm. This stone was historically used in Catholic jewelry, notably adorning the papal ring. It is associated with chastity, truth and peace. Amethyst's calming properties were believed to help to clear the mind when meditating or dreaming, or to increase psychic abilities.

    Healing

    • The healing aspects of amethyst have led to its popularity in alternative medicine. Healers advocate the use amethyst as relief for many physical ailments including headaches, anxiety, and arthritis. Rubbing one's skin with this stone is said to slow signs of aging, and soothe insect bites.
