Difference Between Internal & External Drives

An external hard drive expands storage space.

All computer systems require storage space for programs, operating systems and files. In nearly all computers, this is an internal hard drive. However, many computer users are finding that an external hard drive or internal storage drive, in addition to their computer's factory internal hard drive, improves the function and security of their computer.

  1. Location

    • As the names imply, external hard drives are located outside the computer and internal hard drives are located inside the computer. External hard drives are usually connected to the computer via a USB port. They can also be connected via FireWire or eSATA if the computer is equipped with the proper technology. External hard drives are usually placed in an enclosure to protect the components from dirt and jarring. Internal drives are installed inside the tower of a desktop computer.

    Speed

    • Internal storage drives are faster than external drives. The internal drives are connected with busses that support faster transfer speeds than the USB connections that external drives use. The speed is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm), which refers to how many times the spindle makes a circle in a minute. The higher the rpm, the faster it can read the data, which improves performance.

    Setup

    • External hard drives are easier to set up than internal drives. External drives come with a USB cord. Once the drive is plugged in, it usually launches the installation software automatically. Internal drives require you to open the computer and install the drive inside it, connecting the busses and cables. Anyone can connect an external hard drive to their computer, but installing an internal drive takes some skill and know-how.

    Portability

    • One of the main differences between internal and external drives is the portability. Once an internal drive is installed, it has to be removed to be used with another computer. An external drive just has to be disconnected and reconnected to transfer information from one computer to another. This allows users to put information on the external drive and store it separately from the computer, keeping the information safe from fire and theft.

    Cost

    • Internal drives are usually less expensive than external drives, but for many people who are not comfortable working on their computer themselves, the ease of using the external drive makes it worth the extra cost.
