Ruby port can be improved by blending it with different spirits to make delicious cocktails

Port is a type of very sweet Portuguese wine. Ruby port is the least expensive type of port produced. Aged in bottles instead of casks, it is usually blended with other wines when bottled. Because it is inexpensive, ruby port's taste can be improved by mixing it into different cocktails. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Mulled Wine

    • Mulled Wine is an old European drink which is typically served warm and enjoyed when it's cold out. While the recipes vary, ruby port can be combined with brandy, triple sec, cloves, brown sugar, cinnamon and bay leaves to create a sweeter mulled wine. Combine the ingredients in a pot and warm it very slowly. Do not allow it to come to a boil.

    Port Wine Cocktail

    • The most classic ruby port cocktail is the straight port wine cocktail. Mix ruby port and brandy in a cocktail shaker with ice, pour into a cocktail glass and serve.

    The Port Wine Flip

    • Port Wine Flips are another classic European cocktail that have been around for hundreds of years. To make a Port Wine Flip, combine ruby port, an egg, one tsp. of powdered sugar and two tsp. of light cream with ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake, serve in a cocktail glass and garnish with nutmeg. To lighten this drink, milk can be substituted for cream. You can also opt to only use the egg yolk, however, if the entire egg is used the drink will be more foamy.

    Lucky Ingrid

    • A Lucky Ingrid is a thick drink, best consumed as an after dinner cocktail. The drink is made of half port, a third cognac and a dash of amaretto. Stir together with ice cubes and serve in a cocktail glass.

    A Broken Spur

    • A more North American take on the use of ruby port, a Broken Spur contains 1 1/2 oz. of ruby port, 3/4 oz. of sweet vermouth and 1/4 tsp. of triple sec. This drink should be stirred, not shaken, strained through ice and served in a cocktail glass.
