Craft for Kids: Stick Christmas Star Ornament
The holidays are a good time for families to work together making crafts to hang on the Christmas tree. Making star ornaments out of sticks can be a fun activity for the kids and the entire family. The sticks can be a variety of sizes and materials. Make sure you have plenty of supplies so the kids can make these for their friends as well. Does this Spark an idea?

Sticks
-
Choose from either craft or twig-like sticks that the kids can gather from outdoors. If you want the kids to be able to get outside and use all natural sticks using small twigs cut from trees work best as they are more pliable and less likely to break as the kids work with them. The twigs will give you more options when making the stars as far as overlapping the points of the star. The sticks can also be laid out end to end in a star shape and then glued together to give the kids an open shaped star.
Arranging
-
Help the kids arrange the sticks in a star shape. The star can have six or eight points. Regular scissors will work for cutting out twigs to whatever length you want, depending on how large you want the star to be. Cut the twigs to 8 inches for an 8-inch diameter star. Lay the twigs out so that they overlap in the center. The craft sticks do not need to be cut. If the twigs are very thin the kids can use two or three pieces to form each point of the star.

Tying
-
Tie the sticks of the star together using either twine or a thin, natural looking rope. The rope or twine needs to be wrapped around the center of the star. Depending on the age of the kids, you may need to help a little bit as it can be difficult to hold the center in place and wrap at the same time. Wrap the twine around each section of the star to secure all of the twigs or sticks in place. Tie a tight knot in the twine at the back of the star. Trim the twine so that you have a loop that you can hang on the Christmas tree.
Decorating
-
Use one of any decorating methods to decorate the star, if desired. Brush glue lightly on the points of the star and sprinkle on some glitter. Wrap the points of the star using ribbon so that only the ribbon is visible over the sticks or twigs. The children can also glue sequins or beads on the star. Making the star sparkly will help it reflect off the lights of the Christmas tree.
