The Advantages of Hiring Older Workers
In the past, senior citizens were encouraged to retire and live a life of leisure. Hiring officers did not consider asking these workers to remain in the workplace. However, as the first wave of baby boomers approached age 65 in 2011, amid an economic recession and fix incomes, seniors were more likely to return to work. Here are some reasons why businesses should consider hiring senior citizens.
-
Excellent Work Ethic
-
Many older workers make excellent mentors and role models. According to a 2003 AARP/Roper survey, 30 percent of these "silver collar" employees work for their own enjoyment. They look forward to each working day and take pride in their accomplishments. Many older workers approach second careers with enthusiasm because they appreciate the stimulation and social interaction. They respect their supervisors, listen attentively to them and ask for clarification before starting a task. Employers welcome and appreciate their attention to detail. While checking documents, they often find and correct spelling, grammatical and accounting errors that save the company money and potential embarrassment.
More Flexibility
-
Many older workers are more flexible than their younger counterparts. They do not have to juggle too many spousal and family responsibilities. They can work part-time, split shifts or a few months of the year. Since many mature workers receive pensions and have good health benefits, they do not expect high salaries or other employment perks. Work means more to them than a paycheck.

Better Customer Service
-
Senior citizens with extensive resumes have well-honed skill sets based on their experience. They use their excellent communication skills to listen attentively to their customers and respond appropriately. Those who've learned from past mistakes in prior workplaces do not lose their temper or become impatient with rude or undecided customers. Mature workers can parlay their previous experience into almost any workplace.
Loyalty
-
Senior citizens likely have a permanent residence, so they likely would not exit the organization at an inconvenient time due to marriage or family obligations. A hiring officer can depend upon senior citizens for the length of their contracts. He does not have to worry about losing them and their expertise to a competitor. These experienced workers do not require too much supervision or attention. Many older workers are intrinsically motivated and can work independently. A company that hires many older workers experiences less staff turnover and saves money.
