Catholic Daughters of America Scholarships

In 1903, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas (catholicdaughters.org) was formed to provide Catholic women a way to share in their faith and charitable works. Since the organization's inception, members have participated in efforts supporting both world wars, the education of future priests and aid for the disabled. As part of its charitable efforts, the CDA awards several scholarships annually to members who are dedicated to the Catholic faith and charitable works. All the scholarship amounts are as of 2011.

  1. Father Leonard Bachmann Scholarships

    • Named for Father Leonard Bachmann, a former director of the Shrine of Saint Joseph in Stirling, New Jersey, the two scholarships are worth $3,000 and $1,000, respectively. They are given annually to students pursuing a graduate degree at an accredited university. You must submit official transcripts, a recommendation from a professor, an autobiography and a statement explaining why you want the scholarship for consideration.

    JCDA Scholarship

    • A Junior Catholic Daughters of the Americas member starting her college career is eligible to receive this scholarship, worth $1,000. You must have been an active member of the JCDA for the past two years and been active in your community and church for consideration. You also must submit a reference from a religious leader, a teacher and an adult that is not a family member. An essay on your Catholic values also must be included.

    Youth Scholarships

    • The CDA has two youth scholarships, both worth $500. Its Youth Catholic Scholarship is for students entering their freshman year at a Catholic high school. The Youth Public/Private High School scholarship is awarded to a freshman at any high school. Eligibility requirements include being active in the community. You also must provide recommendation letters and a 250 to 300 word essay.

    Considerations

    • To apply for CDA scholarships, you must be a U.S. citizen, a CDA or JCDA member or a relative of a CDA member as well as a practicing Catholic. Applications for the scholarships are on the organization's website.

As of 2011, the deadline for the scholarships is May 1. All applications, letters of recommendation and official transcripts must be postmarked by the deadline.
