An expectant mother appreciates the help and support of others.

The anticipated arrival of a new little person into the world is always something to celebrate. At a baby shower, friends and family gather to help the parents-to-be give their child a good start. Some people enjoy making their own gift items, and plenty of possibilities exist. Choosing what to make for a baby boy is not that different than choosing for a girl because in the early days the basics are quite similar. It often comes down to color and creativity, but any gift you make yourself will be cherished. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Clothing

    • From knitted caps, booties and sweaters to crocheted mittens and fabric bibs, It is possible to make lovely small items in relatively short time. Do not limit yourself to only blue -- green, yellow, purple and fire-engine red are also fun. Patterns are easy to come by in stores and online. Sew a small cotton t-shirt and dye it the color of your choice, then applique a few fun touches focused on boys. Always use non-toxic paints, glues, yarns, dyes or fabrics, and avoid buttons or anything that could easily come off when the baby handles the item.

    Toys

    • A brightly colored rag doll is a fun and simple gift to make.

Making a soft stuffed animal is a fun way to welcome a baby. These toys can be fancy, large and made of lambswool or small, rag doll types made of cotton or hemp. Combine patchwork squares for the body of a doll and use a plain fabric on which you can paint or draw as a face. Sew a fabric baby book with a custom story about little boys or a nursery rhyme. Rattles and noisemakers are also fun gifts, but follow safety precautions. Multi-patterned, large foam blocks are another easy item to make. Children seem to enjoy these when there are more than one to bounce around or toss.

    Bedding and Bath Items

    • A small needlepoint pillow stitched with the baby's name is a keepsake gift. Buy plain-colored flannel when it is on sale at a fabric shop and make standard-sized crib or carrying blankets. Knitted and crocheted blankets of bright colors last many years if you choose soft, natural yarns that do not hurt or scratch the baby's skin, and that also do not contain toxic dyes. Terrycloth towels are a nice item, especially if you sew a hood in place of one corner.

    Novelties
