Romance ensues in this canopy-draped bedroom.

Studies reveal that people spend one-third of their lives sleeping. Since you spend so much time horizontal, you need a bedroom that you not only sleep in but that also looks good when your eyes are open. The ideal bedroom is different for each person and is influenced by personal taste. Finding your personal style involves a little research and discovery of what makes you feel comfortable and calm. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. American Colonial

    • A favorite traditional bedroom style is American colonial. Characterized by its heavy wood construction, the furniture ensemble includes a four-poster bed, nightstands, dressers and armoires, all constructed from oak. The thickness of oak allows for the intricate, detailed carvings on drawer fronts, headboards and turned leg designs. The heaviness of this bedroom style continues into the heavy dark colors used in the bedding and drapery.

    Modern Bedroom

    • A modern bedroom is expressed with mid-century furniture that has clean lines and simple construction. Low profile bed platforms resembling George Nelson's slatted wood bench and bright colors create a bedroom that is energizing. Modern bedroom furniture varies from dark to light wood, including white and cream. Metal beds and tables are also at home in a modern bedroom, especially highly reflective chrome and steel.

    Contemporary Bedrooms

    • The modern bedroom decor led to contemporary style. Different in subtle ways, a contemporary bedroom also has low-profile furniture with straight, clean lines. But contemporary design is even more simple and minimal, with neutral or Earth tone color palettes. You won't find a complete furniture ensemble in a contemporary bedroom. The bed is the focal point and is flanked by small bedside tables that don't detract from the bed.

    Romantic Bedrooms

    • Create a romantic bedroom using rich fabrics, soft colors, a pop of red for love and an ornately carved or upholstered headboard. Layer in silk, chenille and velvet pillows and throws for luxury and glamour. Drapery moves from the windows to create a canopy that envelopes the bed. The romance factor is enhanced by an eclectic mixture of tables, dressers and chairs.

    Cultural Styles

    • Bedroom styles differ in every culture. From Asian, to Bohemian and even Island style, there are many variations of bedroom decor. These styles are characterized through fabrics, colors and accessories. Old world designs include Italian, French, Spanish and Mediterranean.
