What Are the Seven Deadly Sins of Man?
The seven deadly sins are considered to be the offenses of man that God finds the most reprehensible. Throughout the Christian Bible, those who committed these sins were punished for their behavior, often by death. The seven deadly sins all contradict the teachings of the Bible and the word of God throughout it. Solomon Schimmel's book on the subject speculates that each of these sins is intertwined with the others and leads to further sin.

The seven deadly sins are lust, gluttony, greed, laziness, wrath, envy and pride. Lust refers to wanting something very badly and putting it above God and your loved ones. Gluttony is eating or drinking too much, while greed is acting only for your own self-interest. Laziness is the lack of a desire to do anything, and wrath is acting on extreme anger. Envy is wanting what others have rather than enjoying your own life. Pride is having too much self-esteem, and excessive interest in personal acclaim and superficial success.

The Book of Proverbs points out that gluttons lose sight of other aspects of their lives by focusing on their consumption. Proverbs also says that laziness will complicate the future and the lives of those who are lazy. Wrath is referenced in Proverbs as a means of creating dissent among fellow men. The first Book of Peter says man should want to be closer to God rather than paying so much attention to what others have. Pride is described in Proverbs as the sin of caring more about your own accomplishments than your relationship with God.

Although the seven deadly sins are all mentioned separately in the Bible, the list itself was cultivated after the time of Christ by religious figures. A Greek theologian named Evagrius is credited by DeadlySins.com as the first to create his own list of eight sins. The list was later altered by Pope Gregory, who added envy and combined sins that he thought were similar. Pope Gregory's list is the one most commonly used today.

Faith is the virtue of keeping promises, meaning well and remaining close to God. Hope is keeping a positive outlook, while charity is doing good things for others. Prudence is self-discipline and having a good head on your shoulders. Justice is fairness and a lack of bias, while temperance is keeping your life in moderation and holding back extreme feelings. Fortitude refers to keeping a strong, determined mind.
