Tips & Tricks for Hybrid Travel Trailers

Hybrid travel trailers feature expandable sleeping areas that increase the floor plan without dramatically increasing the weight of the trailer. They allow for maximum sleeping space yet are towable with most SUVs and light trucks. Knowing how to properly prepare and setup a hybrid trailer increases your time relaxing in the outdoors.

  1. Preparation

    • Proper preparation will ensure a safer more relaxing time. Make sure the expanded areas in the hybrid trailer are securely in the towing position. Secure all fragile items to prevent damage from the vibrations and bumps from the road. Prepare a checklist to be sure you have all the necessary gear, recreational items and food for your trip, as this will allow you more time to relax and not have to run after forgotten items.

    Towing

    • Check the towing requirement of the hybrid trailer to make sure your vehicle is the approved size. Stabilizer bars installed to the trailer tongue and vehicle hitch reduce trailer swaying and provide a smoother ride. All air vents, antennae, awnings and steps should be in their towing position before departure to prevent damage to your trailer and other motorists. Check air pressure to ensure proper inflation and have at least one spare tire available in case of a flat.

    Setup

    • Before setting up a hybrid trailer, make sure there is enough clearance on both ends to allow the beds to expand. Hybrid trailers often require up to 5 additional feet of space to allow for walking room. Place wheel chocks, level and secure the trailer with jack stands before entering and expanding the sleeping areas. You must unhook the hybrid trailers from the tow vehicle before expanding the front to prevent damage to both the trailer and tow vehicle.

    Storage

    • Storing a hybrid travel trailer properly will make it last longer and function properly. You must completely dry the fabric walls of the expanded area before compacting them for storage, to reduce the chance of mildew and mold. Insect repellent within the trailer will lessen the risk of damage from moths or other insects who damage clothe and wood. A trailer cover or tarp over the entire trailer will reduce the effects of the elements for long-term outside storage.
